Sri Lanka is becoming a new Hub in Asia for Backpackers with Cheap transport, meals, and stays. This Gem island has everything with Plenty of world Heritage sites, Colorful food, Beautiful Beaches, and One of the most Exotic Train Rides. The Kandy to Ella train journey is considered as one of the most exotic train journeys in the world. Sri Lankan railway isn’t modern as compared with other countries. Most people here travel in the Local Buses & Railway is prior to use for transportation. But still, the railway is the second most used public transport in the country.
During my stay in this Beautiful country, My first priority is always to travel on the Sri Lankan railway, which is equally cheap and fun. whether it’s Kandy to Ella train ride or Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya) to Colombo fort, My journey with Sri Lankan railway was really fascinating. Ultimately Train is an extremely affordable way to see the beautiful countryside of Sri Lanka.
WHY KANDY TO ELLA TRAIN JOURNEY?
This question was in my mind until reaching Ella, Sri Lankan railway connects through its network across the country, But why is this journey always on a talk?
So This train Journey covers all the natural gems of middle Sri Lanka. From tea plantation to one of the most beautiful mountain ranges. Kandy to Ella train journey isn’t just a tourist attraction, the 7 hours train journey shows the real lifestyle of Sri Lankan people, with huge respect the local people also greet you with a sweet gesture.
Train blowing horns passing through the green hills are mesmerizing. The train takes you high into the mountains, through the dense forest & vibrant green tea fields, over bridges, through tunnels, local villages, and beside smiling faces. Throughout your journey, you will notice local people with colorful dresses carrying a tea bag on their back and doing their fieldwork. These things actually make this journey memorable.
HOW TO GET THE TICKET?
Sri Lankan Railway was introduced by the British government in 1864. The main reason for building a railway network in Sri Lanka was to transport and sell Tea and coffee from the hill country to Colombo. Still as of now, the Sri Lankan railway provides offline tickets for the passengers. Sri Lankan railway doesn’t sell tickets online, although you can check the Daily Train schedule on their official website page.
Railways here are classified into 3 categories (1st, 2nd, 3rd Class). 1st class tickets can be booked in advance from the station counter where you will be assured to get a seat, while 2nd class and 3rd class tickets can be purchased directly from the ticket counter on the day of Journey.
The only place you can buy online tickets for trains in Sri Lanka is at 12Go. You may check, they book your ticket and later their representative will handover you once you land in Sri Lanka. Although you can also get your ticket directly from the counter, Just try to reach an hour before the train schedule time, Nevermind riding on 2nd class or 3rd class coaches, as there are marginally any difference and you will assuredly get the seat or if not then just enjoy the landscape.
From Boarding at 3 am early Morning train from Kandy to reaching 11 am at Ella, This 7-8 Hours Journey couldn’t let you rest for a while. Within every next minute, there is something adventures to see in every corners with hundreds of unknown waterfalls, Tunnels, Hills, Bridges, Tea Gardens and Sri Lankan Village lifestyle. This 7 hours journey will show you the highlight of this Gem Island. You probably need at least 2 Camera Battery as keeping one wouldn’t recommended.
